WRONG AGENT CAUSES BAYERN TO MISS OUT SIGNING DEMBELE

Bayern Munich reportedly tried to sign Ousmane Dembele over the summer but they missed out to Borussia Dortmund in part because they negotiated with the wrong agent. Dembele, 19, moved to Dortmund during the transfer window for a fee of €15 million after he scored 12 goals and registered five assists during his breakout season in Ligue 1 with Rennes. He could, however, have been playing for Bayern, but according to reports the champions' technical director Michael Reschke negotiated with the player's former agent Badou Sambague rather than his current representative Marco Kirdemir.

ARMY SUPPORTS NEGOTIATION WITH MILITANTS

The Nigerian military has expressed support to the ongoing negotiation with militants to restore peace in restive Niger Delta region. Defence Headquarters on Wednesday re-emphasised that the military would continue to abide with the ongoing negotiation effort of the Federal Government with militants. Brig.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, Acting Director, Defence Information, however warned that while trying to achieve peace through negotiation, the military would not take kindly with any individual or group who would want to abuse the process. He warned that the military would not hesitate to respond proportionately to any armed attacks against its location in a decision. Such response he explained would be professional and in line with military’s constitutional mandate of defending innocent citizens as well as national critical infrastructure.

FRESH TROUBLE FOR PATIENCE JONATHAN

Mrs. Patience Jonathan, wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan is in fresh trouble following the discovery of an aggregate balance of $40million in bank accounts linked to the former first lady. According to Sahara reporters, the discovery was made after officials of Skye Bank Plc informed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) about the bank accounts. The newly discovered accounts were said to have been opened by Mrs. Jonathan, using fake names, and abetted by crooked bank officials. Sources at the banks said the limp explanations by Patience Jonathan on how she came about such a huge sum in the multiple domiciliary accounts earlier frozen by the EFCC prompted the Skye Bank officials to draw attention of the EFCC to the latest discoveries.

NIGERIA'S OIL RESERVES RUNNING OUT

  The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, yesterday, painted a gloomy outlook for Nigeria’s economic fortunes, as it disclosed that the country’s crude oil and gas reserves were fast depleting. The NNPC in a statement in Abuja, therefore, begged oil and gas exploration companies, professionals and other stakeholders to focus on increasing the nation’s oil and gas reserve base to match national aspirations to increase oil production. Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Mr. Maikanti Baru, who disclosed this when the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists, NAPE, hosted him in Abuja, also expressed readiness of the NNPC to partner with stakeholders in the oil and gas industry to grow the nation’s fast depleting reserves in order to increase productivity in the petroleum sector.

ECOWAS COURT ORDERS FGN TO RELEASE DASUKI

The Court of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, on Tuesday declared the arrest and detention of former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, as unlawful and arbitrary. He approached the ECOWAS court after he was rearrested by members of Nigeria's State Security Service shortly after meeting his bail conditions in November last year. According to the said section, a superior police officer may authorise the search of a resident belonging to a suspect assumed to be in illegal possession of an item, if the officer so authorised has a search warrant.

ANTONIO CONTE WARNS CHELSEA

Chelsea need to improve to compete with Man City and United - Conte Antonio Conte has warned Chelsea that they must build on their 2-0 win over Hull City if they are to compete with the likes of Manchester City and United. Chelsea are currently seventh and Conte, who had set the goal of finishing in the top four before the season started, believes his side have a lot of work to do to match their counterparts. "We need to understand there is a lot to improve," Conte said. "Then we can play better in the games against Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham."

RONALDINHO REGRETS NOT PLAYING ALONGSIDE WITH MESSI AT BARCELONA

Ronaldinho has said he regrets not spending more time playing alongside Lionel Messi, although he feels he made the right decision to leave Barcelona for AC Milan when Pep Guardiola took over at Camp Nou. Ronaldinho was widely regarded as the best player in the world when he played alongside Messi in Barca's first team between 2004 and 2008, a tag which the Argentine has since taken on. "I would have loved to have played more with Messi," he said in an interview. "He's a great player and I'm very glad to have helped him at the beginning of his career with the assistance of his first goal."

LOL..INTERNET CUT AT MANCHESTER CITY TO BUILD TEAM SPIRIT

 Pep Guardiola even cuts the internet at Manchester City - Pablo Zabaleta Manchester City defender Pablo Zabaleta has said that Pep Guardiola has banned cell phones in an effort to build team spirit at the club. The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach has also made his players eat together at the club's Etihad Campus and has cut the internet completely to encourage the players to interact with each other. Zabaleta, away with Argentina for their World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Paraguay, told reporters: "He cuts off the internet and we are incommunicado."

BUHARI STOPPED AT DEVELOPING NIGER-DELTA

THE Senator representing Delta Central senatorial district, Delta State, Ovie Omo-Agege, has alleged that the people of Niger Delta region were the ones making it difficult for President Muhammadu Buhari to come out with his blueprint for the development of the region. Fielding questions from newsmen after a meeting with host community leaders and other stakeholders in Urhoboland at Ughelli, Omo-Agege said: "From the moment the man became President, there has been a concerted effort to deprive him of the opportunity to even show his hand on how he is going to develop the Niger Delta. We believe it would create an enabling environment for him to come and develop the region and thus opportunity should be given before they condemn him, as even God does not even condemn without giving somebody a hearing.

FGN PLANS 6.8TRILLION FOR 2017

The Federal Government plans to spend an estimated N6.812tn as its budget for 2017. The figure is about 13.3 per cent or N806bn above the N6.06tn budgeted for 2016. These details were contained in the 2017-2019 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper, which President Muhammadu Buhari forwarded to the National Assembly on Tuesday. The President wrote to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, attaching the MTEF and the FSP documents. He explained that he was complying with the provisions of the Fiscal Responsibility Act 2007, adding that his action meant that the details of the 2017 budget would soon be laid before the legislature. Part of his letter read, “Pursuant to the provisions of the Fiscal Responsibility Act 2007, the preparation towards the submission of the 2017 budget to the National Assembly is progressing well.

Recession forces Buhari to authorise sale of two presidential aircrafts Finally, President Muhammadu Buhari has given approval for the sale of two presidential aircraft, a Falcon 7x executive jet and Hawker 4000 from the Presidential Air Fleet, PAF. "His directive to a government committee on this assignment is that he liked to see a compact and reliable aircraft for the safe airlift of the President, the Vice President and other government officials that go on special missions. "I am sure the Commander of the Presidential air fleet will any time from now, call you to a ceremony at which he will hand over some other aircraft to the Airforce for their operations", Shehu explained in a statement yesterday.
